Sunday 20 July •Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Presence
To be present is to arrive as one is and open up to the other.
At this instant, as I arrive here, God is present waiting for me.
God always arrives before me, desiring to connect with me
even more than my most intimate friend.
I take a moment and greet my loving God.
Freedom
“I am free.”
When I look at these words in writing,
they seem to create in me a feeling of awe.
Yes, a wonderful feeling of freedom.
Thank You, God.
Consciousness
We are all pilgrims on a journey to You, Lord.
May we contemplate Your time on earth,
and, with Your help, follow in Your footsteps.
The Word of God
Luke 10:38-42 NRSVue38Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him., 39She had a sister named Mary, who sat at Jesus’s feet and listened to what he was saying. 40But Martha was distracted by her many tasks, so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her, then, to help me.” 41But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things, 42but few things are needed—indeed only one. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

Inspiration
In St John’s Gospel we read that Jesus loved Martha and Mary and their brother Lazarus, and he was a familiar visitor to their home. Theirs was a home of faith, where they recognised Jesus as One sent by God, and they made him welcome. Martha helped with the material cup of tea, but Mary heard a different call as she sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to him. In our own lives, we can follow the example of both sisters by being contemplatives in action.
Conversation
God came to bring life, both in Flesh and Word. What life-giving word have I received today? Or if nothing touched me, can I feel the life-giving presence of Jesus with me right now?
Conclusion
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
Amen
