Sunday 5 October •Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Presence
The more we call on the Lord, the more we can feel His presence. Day by day, He draws us closer to His loving heart.
Freedom
Thank you for the gift of freedom, Lord.
Grant that I may always choose to follow You.
Keep me ever mindful of Your ways,
of Your love and concern for all people.
Consciousness
We are all pilgrims on a journey to You, Lord.
May we contemplate Your time on earth,
and, with Your help, follow in Your footsteps.
The Word of God
Luke 17:5-10 NRSVue5The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” 6The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
7“Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? 8Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me; put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? 9Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? 10So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’ ”

Inspiration
Mary, the Mother of God, said, ‘Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to his word.’ We are all the servants of God, who does not need us for his happiness. It is we who, in the truth of our existence, need to worship our God. St Ignatius of Loyola wrote, in the Foundation Principle of his Spiritual Exercises, ‘Man is created to praise, reverence, and serve God our Lord, and by this means to save his soul.’ It is right and fitting that we should do this as we owe everything to God. ‘Lord, that we may see.’
Conversation
Do I notice myself reacting as I pray with the Word of God?
Do I feel challenged, comforted, angry?
Imagining Jesus sitting or standing near me,
I speak out my feelings, as one trusted friend to another.
Conclusion
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
Amen
