Sunday 11 January •The Baptism of the Lord
Presence
Dear Lord, You have called me by my name.
You have carved me in the palm of Your hand.
May I grow in trust and never give in to despair.
Freedom
“I am free.”
When I look at these words in writing,
they seem to create in me a feeling of awe.
Yes, a wonderful feeling of freedom.
Thank You, God.
Consciousness
There is a time and place for everything, as the saying goes.
Lord, grant that I may always desire
to spend time in Your presence,
to hear Your call.
The Word of God
Matthew 3:13-17 NRSVue13Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw God’s Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17And a voice from the heavens said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

Inspiration
The scene and event we are praying about today are very significant both for ourselves and for Jesus, as they begin to explain why Jesus came to earth and how He proceeded to work and inspire humankind. We may find it helpful to reflect on what our own baptism has done for us as we recall how the Holy Spirit came upon us and graced us for mission. We give thanks for that gift and pray that it bears much fruit not only for ourselves but also for those we encounter in our lives.
Conversation
Conversation requires talking and listening.
As I talk to Jesus may I also learn to be still and listen.
I picture the gentleness in His eyes
and the smile full of love as He gazes on me.
I can be totally honest with Jesus as I tell Him of my worries and my cares.
I will open up my heart to Him as I tell Him of my fears and my doubts.
I will ask Him to help me to place myself fully in His care,
to abandon myself to Him,
knowing that He always wants what is best for me.
Conclusion
I thank God for His gift of love
as I go forth with joy and hope
to serve His people.
Amen
