Pause
I bring myself into a quiet space, even in the midst of noise or busyness. I return to the stillness that is always present, at the centre of it all. I rest, as though underneath a large canopy tree on a warm day, at ease in the shade of your greatness. Breathing in and out, I am rooted to this place, to this time – with you, my Maker, here, now.
Ask
I pray for a safe delivery. For both mother and child to feel enveloped and guided by your love through the tumult of childbirth. I pray for those who aid mother and child during this threshold moment, for their capable hands and minds to keep them safe and reassured, for mother and child to feel surrounded by support.
Listen
Even in the depths and wild waves of childbirth, you are with us, O Holy One. Childbirth, once set in motion, is a rushing wave running to meet the shore. You are in the waves, in the rushing, and in the shore. You are in mother and child, extended family, doctor, midwife, nurse. You are in the pain and agony, as well as in the ecstasy. You are with us, in and through.
Share
O God, who does not tremble in the face of childbirth? Who can believe the wonders that these bodies are capable of? Please God, bless mother and child and keep them safe from all dangers and insecurities. Protect them. Provide the care, counsel and companionship they need in this holy and heightened moment. Be their North Star when they feel overwhelmed or lost. Guide them through, safely to the other side of delivery and beyond.
Reflect
Bringing my prayers to you, O Lord, I feel the reassurance of your love. I rest in the centre of your stillness, as a child in her mother’s womb. I feel the power of your faithfulness. I put my trust in you.
