Monday of the third week of Advent
God, enlighten my mind as I come with a humble heart to hear your truth. Shine your light on me in this moment, softening my heart as I tune in to your wisdom.
Matthew 21:27
So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
I enjoy painting in my free time, and when creating a portrait of a person, I try to capture a likeness and convey the personality and essence of the person. During this time, I feel I am tapping into a mystery of something deep within me and the other person. Similarly, we all have the power to tap into the divine mystery by taking time to pray with Jesus, reflecting on passages of scripture, walking in nature, and receiving insight into the essence of God. At the same time, we are both human and divine – each complementing the other – and maintaining balance between the two can be a challenge for us.
Much controversy followed Jesus as he was preaching the gospel. In today’s reading, we see him being challenged by the chief priests as he is teaching in the temple. We also shouldn’t be surprised when we receive attacks for preaching the gospel. We would do well to follow Jesus’ example by being aware of our words and actions and keeping calm, just as He did. We are mindful that he came to lead people into the full development of all they can be and are meant to be. He empowers us to live in this way by pouring the Holy Spirit into our hearts.
Lord, when I am challenged or I’m not sure what to say, give me your wisdom. Help me to speak with gentleness and truth, keeping calm as you did. Let my words reflect your light and my actions your love, hoping that others will be drawn to you.
“Everything is related, and we human beings are united as brothers and sisters on a wonderful pilgrimage, woven together by the love God has for each of his creatures, and which also unites us in fond affection with brother sun, sister moon, brother river and mother earth.”– Pope Francis (Laudato Si’)
