Saturday of the first week of Advent
Opening Prayer
As I come into your presence, attune my heart to the whisperings of your wisdom, the promptings of your spirit, and the stillness of your peace.
Scripture
Matthew 9:35-10:1,5-8
Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness.
Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not take a road leading to gentiles, and do not enter a Samaritan town, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick; raise the dead; cleanse those with a skin disease; cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.
Reflection
The image of a shepherd for me is one who cares, protects and guides his sheep to safety. We have survived childhood by having had significant people in our lives overseeing us. The children in a playground are oblivious to the person who is in charge, who keeps them safe. Playgrounds for children are safe yet challenging, depending on the age and personality of the child; some are cautious, while others are risk-takers. It is a job that is hidden. Jesus tried to stay hidden in his ministry, yet managed to draw and guide multitudes of people with his compassion and wisdom. As Christians, caring for one generation to the next can be a thankless job, but one that brings peace, as we help to bring one another home. Our true home, which is God’s peace, is not a fleeting emotion but a lasting gift that surpasses human comprehension (Philippians 4:7). Be faithful in prayer and stay in consolation; it is for which we long. We may not always realise it, but the peace will last for all eternity. Jesus’ model of discipleship is challenging yet rewarding. “The kingdom of heaven has come near”.
Reflection Prayer
Lord, draw me close to your heart, that I may share your compassion.
Help me to guide others gently towards your peace.
Let my words and actions reveal your love.
May I be a quiet light for those searching, leading them home to you.
Concluding Prayer
“In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love. Peace begins with a smile.”
– St. Teresa of Calcutta
