Friday of the 1st week of Lent
Lord, grant that I may be still more often, to know your peace and your calm. I still myself in body, mind and spirit, for these few moments of quiet reflection with you.
Romans 12:3-8 NRSVue
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the encourager, in encouragement; the giver, in sincerity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.
Do I have an inflated sense of who I am? Of what I do? Do I see my job as more important than what others do? Do I see myself as more deserving? Have I ever said or thought these words about someone: Just who do you think you are??? Or these about myself: Do you know who I am??? Today, I will make a deliberate effort to recognise the jobs done by everyone I come in contact with. I will thank them for what they do, knowing that our gifts “differ according to the grace given to us”.
Jesus, help me to see each person as you see them – of infinite value, precious and loved uniquely by you. If I judge others, help me to see the wound in myself that may lie beneath that judgment. Heal me, Lord, and set me free. Amen.
