Monday of the 1st week of Lent
Oh my God, I want to be in your presence, without distractions. I prepare myself to read and reflect on the Word of God.
Proverbs 16:16 NRSVue
How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.
Do I measure success in life by the size of my bank account? Do I see my purpose on earth to amass a fortune, to get rich, to have that big house, a new car, those foreign holidays? Is my self-worth tied to the state of my finances? I work hard and make money. I have ambition. I want to improve my lot in life and that of my children. But do I value money and material things above all else? Is this what drives me? Do I own them or do they own me? Today, I will look at my relationship with money, with silver and gold, and give thanks for what I have. And I will pray for the grace to recognise ‘enough’.
Dear Jesus, I want you to be at the centre of my life, that which I value most. Help me to remember that in you, my ‘cup is overflowing’ and that I have more than enough if I but trust in you. Amen.
