Monday of the 4th week of Lent
Dear Lord, thank you for your infinite kindness, grace and mercy. May this time of prayer fill me these divine attributes, so that I may share them with others.
Ecclesiastes 2:18-21 NRSVue
I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to my successor, and who knows whether he will be wise or foolish? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity. So I turned and gave my heart up to despair concerning all the toil of my labors under the sun, because sometimes one who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave all to be enjoyed by another who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.
When I give, do I let go, allowing the receiver to do what they will with my gift? Or do I want to control them? Do I look at someone begging in the streets and judge them by what they wear? Do I not give to them because they have money for cigarettes and beer? Do I resent those who benefit from my labour? Do I guard my knowledge afraid that someone might take my job? Do I keep what I know to myself because I earned it – why should others get for free what I had to work so hard for? Today, I will take the time to examine what I feel when I give/share/help. I will share freely and thank God for being in a position to do so.
Dear Jesus, you taught us not to be attached to the things of this world, and that includes not only material things, but also our achievements, our projects, our knowledge and our experience. May I be open, generous and gracious in sharing my gifts with others, remembering that we are all one in you, Lord. May I remember all those from whose skills, gifts and talents I have benefited from, and give thanks. Amen.
