Thursday of the 2nd week of Lent
Lord, in quietness and trust is my strength. Jesus, I trust in you. Help me to become quiet to hear your voice today.
2 Esdras 10:24 NRSVue
Therefore shake off your great sadness and lay aside your many sorrows, so that the Mighty One may be merciful to you again and the Most High may give you rest, a respite from your troubles.”
Sometimes it requires effort to shake off a bad mood. Oftentimes it’s easier to wallow in self-pity and sadness than to deliberately find things to be happy about. Wallowing has its place, albeit a temporary one. Yet if I choose, I can shake off my sadness and lay aside my sorrows. Today, I will slow down and take stock so that I can recognise the respite God is offering me from my troubles. I will take Him up on the invitations He sends my way and give thanks for His mercy.
Dear Jesus, when I feel weighed down by sadness or sorrow, show me how to take respite in you, and how to be grateful for all the good things in my life. Help me to count my blessings, literally, and to let you carry my sorrow. Amen.
