Thursday of the 4th week of Lent
Lord, I come to seek your presence; I long for your healing power. Bless me in these few moments of quiet prayer.
Tobit 4:5-7 NRSVue
“Be mindful of the Lord all your days, my son, and refuse to sin or to transgress his commandments. Do what is right all the days of your life, and do not walk in the ways of wrongdoing, for those who act honestly will prosper in all their activities. To all those who practice righteousness, give alms according to your circumstances, my son, and do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor. Then the face of God will not be turned away from you.
What are my circumstances? Am I well off? Am I just doing okay? Am I struggling to make ends meet? How much of what I earn do I share with others whose need is greater than mine? Do I share at all? Or do I hoard my riches for fear that one day I might need them? Do I avert my gaze when walking along the street, avoiding eye contact with those holding out their hands, asking for help? Who am I to judge them? Today, I will not refuse anyone who asks for my help, be they a colleague, a friend, a relative, a charity, or a random stranger. Today, I refuse to turn my face away and will give according to my circumstances.
Dear God, place in my path someone I can serve this day, someone I can love as you would love them if you were here in the flesh today. Heal me of all fear, avarice, selfishness and judgment and give to me a generous and open heart. Amen.
