Tuesday of the 1st week of Lent
“Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually.” (Psalm 105:4 NRSVue). Oh Jesus, I take a moment to seek your face. You always gaze on me with love.
Proverbs 16:21-24 NRSVue
The wise of heart is called perceptive, and pleasant speech increases persuasiveness. Wisdom is a fountain of life to one who has it, but folly is the punishment of fools. The mind of the wise makes their speech judicious and adds persuasiveness to their lips. Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
Do I choose my words well or do I speak too often in haste? Do I consider the feelings of others when I speak? Am I overly critical of other people’s faults and failings? Do I use my ability to speak for the good of others? Do I speak for others when they cannot speak for themselves? Do I recognise what is behind my words, what drives me to say what I say? God has given us a voice. He has given us the power of speech. Some of us may only speak one language; others might speak two, or three, or more. But how conscious and appreciative are we of this gift? Do we take it for granted? Today, I will pay more attention to my words and what I say, thanking God for my ability to speak and remembering that “pleasant words are like honeycomb.”
Lord, there is power in our words, power to build up or tear down. Help me to use the gift of speech well, to give life and to bless others. Amen.
