I pause and think of the love & grace God showers on me in each and every moment… I stop and breathe in order to receive…
Psalm 92:13-15 NRSVue

We, as a society, don’t value our elderly as much as we could or indeed should. Busy rearing our own kids, we might prefer the convenience of a nursing home rather than care for ageing parents. When hiring, we may prefer young and quick rather than older and slower. But in old age they still produce fruit. Today, I will make it my business to speak with someone older than me, to listen to their stories and advice, and to acknowledge their value. Perhaps an elderly neighbour, a long-serving colleague, an old man or woman having coffee alone or walking the streets. Knowing that I, too, will grow old, I will give thanks for the ability to see beyond age and give thanks for the fruit still produced.
Oh Lord, open my eyes and my heart to older people in society. Help me to appreciate all the gifts and knowledge and wisdom that they offer… Help me to look honestly at my own attitudes and feelings towards aging, frailty, sickness and death… Lord, may I remember that nothing in this world lasts forever, but that you offer us eternal life and make all things new. Amen.
