Tuesday of the 4th week of Lent
I take a moment or two to tune into my breath and come before God. I prepare myself to read and reflect on the Word of God.
Sirach 19:13-17 NRSVue
Question a friend; perhaps he did not do it; or if he did, so that he may not do it again. Question a neighbor; perhaps he did not say it; or if he said it, so that he may not repeat it. Question a friend, for often it is slander; so do not believe every word. A person may make a slip without intending it. Who has not sinned with his tongue? Question your neighbor before you threaten him, and make room for the law of the Most High.
Am I too quick to believe something bad about someone? Am I too quick to rush to judgment? Am I too quick to involve myself in spreading gossip? Do I hold grudges? Am I an offence waiting to be taken? Do I fail to offer someone the benefit of the doubt? Am I always looking for someone to blame? Today, as I give thanks for the insight offered in this scripture, I look back at a time when I was too quick to judge. If an apology is needed, I will give it. And when I find myself quickly jumping to conclusions, I will stop myself and ask why.
Lord, help me to give others the benefit of the doubt, to listen well, to practise compassion and to not be too quick in jumping to conclusions. Help me to slow down and to be considerate in how I approach any situation, any person. Amen.
