Wednesday of the 5th week of Lent
Dear Jesus, let my heart respond to your love as you minister to me during this time of prayer.
Sirach 32:1-2 NRSVue
If they make you master of the feast, do not exalt yourself; be among them as one of their number. Take care of them first and then sit down; when you have fulfilled all your duties, take your place, so that you may be merry along with them and receive a wreath for your excellent leadership.
Do I identify too much with my title? Do I let power go to my head? Do I expect better treatment because of the position I hold? Have I forgotten that leadership, on any level, is a form of service? I have a duty to those who look to me to take care of them. I make sure my children are fed before I eat. I make sure my workers are paid before I pay myself. I make sure that everyone is treated fairly and equally. Grateful for whatever responsibility I have been given in life, be it at home, in my community, or in my work, I will take time today for others, to be among them as one of their number.
Lord, thank you for the responsibilities, influence and leadership I have been given. May I use these gifts and powers well, for the good of others. May I remember that the first is last, and the last first. May I never abuse my power to try and control or manipulate others. May I remember that Jesus was most powerful at his weakest. May I fulfill my duties and guide and serve others with love, and care tenderly and reverently for those who are more vulnerable than I am. Amen.
