Ash Wednesday
Lord, thank you for being my companion on life’s journey, each day, and in each moment, including this one. Help me to tune in to your presence now…
James 3:17
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.
Note the order James uses in his words. First pure (genuine, authentic). Then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield (flexible), full of mercy and good fruits (deeds), without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. How genuine and authentic am I in my relationships, in my work practices, in my actions? Why do I do what I do? Is it to satisfy myself, to make myself feel better, or is it in the service of others? How flexible am I when it comes to listening to others, to hearing their suggestions? Is it my way or the highway? Do I invite stress and disappointment into my life by insisting that everything is done in a certain way? When someone does me wrong, do I forgive them and show mercy, or do I exact revenge, however trifling? Do I favour one child or coworker over another? Do I say one thing and do another? This one sentence from James, if parsed and analysed, is a blueprint for good living. There’s a lot to take in. Sit with it. Note what resonates most. Then act on it.
Dear God, place in my path someone I can serve this day. Give me the grace to recognise them and act on your word. Help me live my faith. Amen.
