Saturday of the 4th week of Lent
Lord, thank you for being my companion on life’s journey, each day, and in each moment, including this one. Help me to tune in to your presence now…
1 Kings 19: 11-13
11 He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind, and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake, 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire, and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
I pray. I pray. And I pray, we say. But God never answers. I talk to God, we say, but God doesn’t listen. What are we expecting? A vision at the end of our bed? A voice from the heavens? An announcement on social media? God speaks. He answers. It’s we who don’t listen, who don’t hear. We live in a noisy world, surrounded by people and things: everyone and everything vying for our attention. If we want to hear what God has to say, we need to pay attention to the little things, the signs he sends, the messengers he puts in our path. And we need to be still. Inside and out.
Dear God, I will make quiet time for you each day so that I can hear you when you speak. Help me live my faith. Amen.
