John 13:31-38 NRSVue
31When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Very truly, I tell you, before the cock crows, you will have denied me three times.

Some thoughts on this scripture
Reflection
Lord, may I never be so wrapped up in my own plans that I miss your appeals
and invitations.
Reflection
Enthusiasm did not allow Peter to be calculating or measured. I pray for the
same willingness to follow Jesus even as I know that I need also the courage
and resolve that would fail Peter in the difficult hour.
Reflection
Peter's denials were matched by his professions of faith. I prepare myself to
walk with Jesus on his way of the cross by recalling how I have been strong
and by asking for forgiveness for my weakness.
Reflection
I ask God for a greater desire to go where Jesus has gone, to live as he
lived, to love as he loved. I realise the cost, but I know that it is only in
giving glory to God that I can become the person God made me to be.
Reflection
I imagine God looking on the world, with all its multitude of people who love
and serve each other in so many different ways. I imagine all the Christian
communities that gather to worship today and pray that they may be seen to be
disciples of Jesus by the love they show.
