John 19:25-27 NRSVue
25And that is what the soldiers did.
Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

Reflection on John 19:25-27
Inspiration from 2025-09-15 Daily Prayer
Even in his agony on the cross, Jesus is mindful of others. Next to the gift of himself to us, his greatest gift must surely be his own Mother. Mary accepted her son’s dying wish and embraced her new role. As the apostles gathered in the Upper Room after the Ascension, she joined them as they prayed. This is the infant Church, and Mary is the Mother of the Church. We pray for a greater devotion to her.
Mary is truly the model of the perfect disciple. With extraordinary courage and love, she is there at the foot of the cross as her Son gives his life for us. In heaven, she continues to intercede for us with her Son.

Yeats’s poem helps me to plumb the depths of Mary’s thoughts on Calvary: What is this flesh I purchased with my pains, This fallen star my milk sustains, This love that makes my heart’s blood stop Or strikes a sudden chill into my bones And makes my hair stand up?
