John 3:16-18 NRSVue

16“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

17“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18Those who believe in him are not condemned, but those who do not believe are condemned already because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

Reflection on John 3:16-18

Inspiration from 2026-05-31 Daily Prayer

We’re with Nicodemus today and ask him to teach us what he wishes. He appears in our story out of the dark shadows, for he knows only too well that he dare not antagonise his fellow religious leaders. Yet he has an inner honesty that compels him to interrogate Jesus on a number of difficult issues. Evil is darkness, but through Jesus’ coming into the world, the power of that darkness is controlled. We ask, Lord, that you continue to keep it at bay for us.

Further reflection

They looked down from heaven – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – with love for their people - for all of us. They could see men and women of all races, colours, ages, faiths, holiness and sin. They knew help was needed for the human race and they waited a long time before the time was right. Prayer inserts us into our true space of belonging – into the community of the Trinity, and in that prayer we are called to bring this divine help to the human race.
