John 5:31-38 NRSVue

31“If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 32There is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that his testimony to me is true. 33You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth. 34Not that I accept such human testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36But I have a testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father has given me to complete, the very works that I am doing, testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me. 37And the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen his form, 38and you do not have his word abiding in you, because you do not believe him whom he has sent.

Some thoughts on this scripture

Reflection
Jesus speaks of the close relationship of father and son. Believing in him is necessary for his listeners for believing in God. All that we know of Jesus says something about the Father - the way he lives and relates to people in compassion, open-heartedness, forgiveness, kindness; all are qualities of God. The challenge of faith is big - faith in God means faith in Jesus. Each time we enter into the presence of Jesus in prayer, we enter deeply into the presence of God.

Reflection
Can each of us be a ‘burning and shining light' like John the Baptist? Our call is to bring forth the life of God like Mary and, like John, to announce Jesus in word and deed. Prayer is the time when we can turn on this light and allow it reach our lives.

Reflection
Jesus appeals to the minds of those who seek to disregard him. He reminds them of what they have seen, of the witnesses they have heard and of the words of the prophets. I pray that I am he be blessed with deeper faith as I 'review the evidence' to which Jesus draws my attention.

Reflection
As I believe in Jesus who was sent by God, the word of God is alive me. I can give witness to this word in my deeds and speech.
