Luke 1:26-33 NRSVue

26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.”, 29But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 33He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

Some thoughts on this scripture

Reflection
Mary might well have felt afraid as she became aware of the presence of God. I spend this time in the presence of the same God and give thanks for the welcome and reassurance that God gives me. I ask Mary to be with me, to help me open my heart to God as she did.

Reflection
Mary would leave this marvellous scene to go to the help of Elizabeth her cousin. As I think of my needs, I bear in mind that there are many whose needs are greater.

Reflection
Mary said yes to the plan that was outlined in the great sweep of the angel's words. I sometimes quail at the day-to-day challenges that I face. I ask God's help to remember that I can make God's ways evident even in small and ordinary things.

Reflection
By her "yes", Mary first bore the Son of God in her heart, and then in her body.

Reflection
Can I watch the scene? A young woman, who could have had no idea of what was being asked or where it might lead, made a leap of trust.

Reflection
How does Mary's experience touch me? Am I called to "bear" God in my heart? What issues of surrender and trust arise in my case?
