Luke 6:31-35 NRSVue

31Do to others as you would have them do to you.

32“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive payment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35Instead, love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.

Some thoughts on this scripture

Reflection
How generously have I responded in the last few days to things that were asked of me?

Reflection
Are there people in my life that I find difficult to love? Can I ask God for the grace to love them?

Reflection
One way to ask for this grace is the following prayer, which you might already know: /Dearest Jesus, teach me to be generous. Teach me to love as you deserve: to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and to look for no reward, save that of knowing that I do your holy will. Amen./

Reflection
You are right, Lord. Sometimes my gratitude is the expectation of future favours. My lending and giving can be tainted with self-interest, like the aid to Third World countries that is tied to guarantees of trade. You ask me to go beyond that, to love as your heavenly father loves, creatively, generous to the ungrateful and the wicked.

Reflection
Dearest Jesus, teach me to be generous. Teach me to love as you deserve: to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and to look for no reward, save that of knowing that I do your holy will.

Reflection
Thank you, Lord, for this calling, to be a child of the Most High, to let your goodness flow through me towards the deserving and the undeserving.
