Luke 7:18-23 NRSVue

18The disciples of John reported all these things to him. So John summoned two of his disciples 19and sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?” 20When the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to expect someone else?’ ” 21Jesus had just then cured many people of diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits and had given sight to many who were blind. 22And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight; the lame walk; those with a skin disease are cleansed; the deaf hear; the dead are raised; the poor have good news brought to them. 23And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”

Some thoughts on this scripture

Reflection
Jesus sends John an answer, but it is not a declaration. It is a picture of a world in which God's spirit is powerfully at work. This image is to encourage John, to give him heart in prison. I picture what Jesus describes.

Reflection
Jesus wants to give me heart by pointing my attention to where the Spirit is at work. I review my current concerns with God, asking for light and hope.

Reflection
John and his disciples wonder whether Jesus is the expected Messiah. Jesus answers them by telling them of all the miracles he has worked. Jesus' works of healing, preaching and raising the dead are signs that he is the Messiah, the one in and through whom God 'visits' his people

Reflection
Do I ever take offence at Jesus' teaching? Do I truly believe? Do I love? Am I a disciple?
