Mark 4:2-9 NRSVue

2He began to teach them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them: 3“Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4And as he sowed, some seed fell on a path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil. 6And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root it withered away. 7Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. 8Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.” 9And he said, “If you have ears to hear, then hear!”

Some thoughts on this scripture

Reflection
The seed has been scattered by Jesus in my life, but the story is not over. Full of hope and desire, Jesus continually offers me life. I look at my life and see that there may be areas I need to tend to, to allow the seed to grow.

Reflection
I take care not to focus on the scorched and rocky areas, but acknowledge with thanks that God is working in me, bringing life, growth and fruit.

Reflection
The seed is a symbol for God's word. God's work spoken to each human being can be choked off by the cares and worries of life, by the lure of wealth or other irrational appetites. I examine the cares and concerns that prevent me from hearing what God wants to say to me.

Reflection
In the New Testament bearing fruit is a metaphor for repentance, conversion and good works. I think over, and gratefully acknowledge, the good works that God has enables me to undertake.
