Matthew 9:20-22 NRSVue

20Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from a flow of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, 21for she was saying to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well.” 22Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that moment.

Some thoughts on this scripture

Reflection
You feel the crowd was eager for a tragedy, a death, so that they could do their wailing and fluting. They were angry and scornful when Jesus kept hope alive: /The girl is not dead but sleeping./ It is the same hunger for sensation and shock that sells tabloid headlines. I feel it in myself too at times, Lord. We gather in greater numbers to bewail the dead than to keep hope alive in the sickly.

Reflection
You, Lord, have an eye for the hope in me, for that glimmer of vitality that can be fanned into flame. Say to me too: /Get up. Live./

Reflection
Prayer is like Jesus laying his hand on us. It is like the woman touching the cloak of the Lord, and like Jesus taking the dead girl by the hand and raising her. Prayer is close intimacy with God - the intimacy of holding a hand, stroking a brow, touching a person’s clothes. We find that touch is usual in the relations of Jesus and people. A touch means people are near to each other, that nothing like sin or fear or shame is a barrier. Touch is a sacramental moment when God and the individual share what is deepest in each other.

Reflection
The gospel story remembers a woman who was suffering for a long time. She came in her need for healing; the journey was enlivened by her faith. Faith may not cure our ills and sicknesses; but over a long time of faith, we are healed and strengthened. Maybe our prayer today might reach out to those whose suffering is long-term with little hope of healing.

Reflection
My prayer will be poorer if I think I do not deserve Jesus attention. I draw inspiration from the example of this woman who had the faith to reach out. In my prayer I stretch out my hand, believing that I, too, will receive God’s grace

Reflection
I listen to Jesus say to me, ‘Take heart, your faith has made you well.’
