Saturday 14 December •St John of the Cross
Presence
Every moment is alive with the glorious presence of God. As I give myself more and more to intimate communion with the One who created me, I find that I simply have no time to worry.
Freedom
I ask for the grace to believe
in what I could be and do
if I only allowed God, my loving Creator,
to continue to create me, guide me and shape me.
Consciousness
As I spend this time with You, Lord,
I am aware of how blessed I truly am.
I think of the love and graces in my life,
and I feel grateful.
The Word of God
Matthew 17:10-13 NRSVue10And the disciples asked him, “Why, then, do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11He replied, “Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things, 12but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but they did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands.” 13Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

Inspiration
John the Baptist was seen by many as a great prophet and as Elijah returned in some way. In his ministry he brought a reminder of the old prophecies as he prepared the way for the eventual fulfilment of those prophecies.
Jesus knew that they would treat him as they had treated the prophets of old. Talk to him now about what it was like to carry within him the burden of this knowledge as he went about his mission in the face of opposition.
Conversation
What feelings, questions, doubts or inspirations does today’s Gospel stir in me? Can I bring all that I am feeling and thinking to Jesus, in the comforting knowledge that He is really here with me?
Conclusion
I thank God for His gift of love
as I go forth with joy and hope
to serve His people.
Amen
