Friday 14 March
Presence
Lord, help me to be fully alive to Your holy presence. Enfold me in Your love. Let my heart become one with Yours.
Freedom
Lord, like Saint Ignatius, I offer you my memory, understanding,
my entire will. All I ask for in return is Your love and Your grace – that’s enough for me.
Consciousness
As I talk to You, O God,
help me to grow in appreciation of the gifts of communication.
Grant that I will speak out for those who have no voice
and always have a kind word for those in need.
The Word of God
Matthew 5:20-26 NRSVue20For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
21“You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder,’ and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’ 22But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment, and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council, and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire. 23So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. 25Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. 26Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

Inspiration
Jesus came not to abolish the law but to perfect it. Jesus speaks with a new authority that comes from knowing that the Father had sent him. In the new creation of the kingdom of God, the standards of right behaviour are indeed set high. ‘Be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is perfect.’
Jesus came to bring peace and reconciliation to all people. If we do not forgive others, we will not be forgiven ourselves. When we come to worship with others we should be at peace with them and reconciled in our hearts with those who have injured us. How aware am I that we go to worship God as a people and that we are saved as a people?
Conversation
How has God’s Word moved me?
Has it left me cold?
Has it consoled me or moved me to act in a new way?
I imagine Jesus standing or sitting beside me and
I turn and share my feelings with Him.
Conclusion
I thank God for these few moments we have spent alone together and for any insights I may have been given concerning the text.
Amen
