Isaiah 41:17-20 NRSVue

17When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. 18I will open rivers on the bare heights and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water and the dry land springs of water. 19I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive; I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane and the pine together, 20so that all may see and know, all may consider and understand, that the hand of the Lord has done this, the Holy One of Israel has created it.

Further reflection

Let's imagine the dramatic scene Isaiah paints: a desert, barren, parched and lifeless where God's people starve and thirst. By God's gift we follow its transformation.

Where is my world barren or loveless? Where do I see people thirsting for life?

Can I bring this situation to the Lord?

/I will put in the wilderness the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive; I will set in the desert the cypress, the plane and the pine together./ Perhaps this is what you are doing in Ireland now, Lord. People from every part of the world are finding nourishment here, in what used to be a poor country but now is rich. The hand of the Lord has done this. We are learning how much the Chinese, East Europeans, Filipinos and Africans can contribute, bringing life and variety to our land, and enjoying the richness of culture they find here.
