Luke 19:41-44 NRSVue

41As he came near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42saying, “If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43Indeed, the days will come upon you when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you and hem you in on every side. 44They will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”,

Reflection on Luke 19:41-44

Inspiration from 2025-11-20 Daily Prayer

‘Oh that today you would listen to his voice, harden not your hearts’ (Psalm 94). In this month of November, we pray especially for our dead and we reflect upon our own end. Our prisons have many people in them who regret past acts and decisions and would give anything to reverse them.

As we look back, are there times when we did not recognise the visitation of God in our lives and times, even when we heard but did not heed his voice? Let us pray to use well the time and the opportunities that are still left to us.

Further reflection

I know what it is like when friends can’t see what is good for them. As I listen to Jesus yearning for Jerusalem, I allow his gaze to fall lovingly on me. What does he long for me to wake up to?

My prayer is my practice of seeking God’s perspective, a way of listening out for the voice I might otherwise miss. Perhaps I can see how I have grown, how less is hidden from my eyes.

Sometimes when we feel we're in a strong position, we don't care if we hurt other people.

Jesus is warning the whole of Jerusalem about this danger. Does it apply to me?

What are the "things that make for peace" in my situation?
