Pentecost is one of the major celebrations in the Christian and Jewish churches. “Pentecost” comes from the Greek word for “fiftieth,” referring to the 50-day countdown from Passover.

The Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus’ disciples as tongues of fire, while they were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Shavuot. This is why the Christian church celebrates Pentecost 50 days after Easter. This was the promise of Jesus. Before he ascended into heaven, he promised us the Holy Spirit, who was to be our helper, our comforter, and our friend. May we come to know the Holy Spirit and experience the love and joy offered to us, so that we, too, can go out and spread the good news to the whole earth. Amen!
