John 15:16-17 NRSVue
16You did not choose me, but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

Further reflection
When a prisoner escaped from Auschwitz, the Nazis reacted by choosing at random ten others to die as punishment. One of the ten, a married man, was weeping that he would never see his wife and children again. The Franciscan priest Maximilian Kolbe (his feast is today) offered to stand in for him, and died by lethal injection.
Lord, you chose Maximilian for heroism, and he inspires me. I feel I am in a different league, but you have some vocation for me, too.
